I'm not sure keeping a blog is really my thing. "Finishing stuff," and "seeing things through" are 2 of my least accomplished qualities. Yet every now and then I fool myself into thinking I have something to write about and then take a shot. I try and tell myself that 60% of the baloney I post on Facebook (the rants, complaints, criticisms, saucy videos/images, personal attacks, threats, etc...) would be better fodder for my blog. I can link to it from Facebook, and hopefully people will start visiting. And that will give me some motivation to write.
Then I laugh and watch TV.
I'm gonna try again, though. I didn't really have anything to rant about today, but I was getting my blood angered up Sunday over pop-culture killjoys, and their obsessions with asserting Toy Story 3 is a holocaust parable, or that superhero movies are poorly disguised endorsements of fascist ideals. There are also the Fact Nazis trying to tear down any enjoyment of things such as TRUE BLOOD. Yes, cocksuscker. It uses stereotypical southern accents and tropes, and that plant would not be growing during that fucking time of year, nor would their be that many of those fucking plants. You are right.
But you are also a fucking joyless, pompous douchebag. I am not the biggest True Blood fan, mind you. But despite it being set in the south, it is a fantasy world through and through. It is as much a fantasy world as presented in the Star Wars films, or Lord of the Rings, or Pretty Woman. You cannot complain about the accuracy of supposed real world fact when they are integrated into a blatant fantasy setting. You may as well bitch about the bushes that shouldn't be growing in the forest of fucking Endor, or the inaccuracies of Wookie mating season.
I have been a pop-culture killjoy. Most recently it's been about Twilight. I hate it. I have seen and read just enough to know that I think it sucks. I want nothing to do with it. But the massive spread of pricks who either don't have anything better to do with their degrees, or who don't have degrees but have to resort to chest-beating, faux intellectual puffery about vampires has pushed me over the edge. I vow to say nothing negative to anybody who pays to see any more Twilight movies. I will not rage on about the romanticized view of teen sexuality. I will simply allow that there are people who enjoy this stuff, and god bless them. Life sucks right now in this country. If somebody gets a few hours of pleasure from watching bad actors play vampires in a movie, or bad actors play vampires on a tv show then who am I, or you, to begrudge them that?
There is certainly value in critical examination of pop culture. It is important, and it can expose deeper and more important layers in material once thought disposable. That being said, sometimes things are EXACTLY what they seem. The vast majority of articles and papers written in this field simply say more about the writer than the material. That is useful as well, as the writer can develop and propose ideas that may make material more personal to others. But there is a line between presenting such ideas as fact or as the musings of the writer. And is especially sketchy when imprinting such dubious thoughts upon fare that is admittedly lite and disposable.
I, personally, also find it more than a bit pompous. "Oh, I must inform the great unwashed that True Blood is a travesty because the southern accents are miss-used from region to region!! And you ignorant trash must also know that the cartoon about the talking toys is meant as a deep dissection of the pain and horror the Jews went through. None of you dumb, uneducated fools can think for yourselves. Please allow me to do the thinking for you."
I'm as liberal as they come. But anybody who thinks that most Americans do not have brains is a hipster douche idiot who simply empowers the Palinites, and their so-called rejection of "elitist" or "intelligent" individuals. It's not that they hate smart people. They, too, hate assholes.
In summation:
Toy Story 3 is about talking toys. I have not seen one article or interview with John Lasseter or anybody at Pixar confirming that "yea, it's totally all about the holocaust!"
Iron Man is not an embrace of unbridled militarism. It's about a fucker in a metal suit who blows shit up.
Twilight is about vampires and werewolves in unashamedly melodramatic and drawn out love. Chaste love. No nookie.
And True Blood is a fantasy. About about vampires and werewolves fucking. A lot.
