Firstly, I am trying to call them CDs and not albums anymore. It still doesn't sound right, contemporize, man!
Again, these are mostly based on there impact on me. And these ARE in order:
1) PERMISSION TO LAND by The Darkness....it is the most flat-out fun cd I heard in years. Contrary to popular belief they were NOT a "parody" band. Yes, they were cheeky, and lyrically playful. However, they were a GENRE band. They played pop metal seriously, with joy, AND THEY COULD FUCKING PLAY. And I don't say this just because I am Facebook friends with Ed, the drummer (I can rarely name-drop so forgive me), but his work pro-fucking-pels the whole endeavor. Shame they imploded. Shame Justin developed the drug problem. I would love it if they reunited. One more note: their second and final CD (ONE WAY TICKET TO HELL...AND BACK) is the most underrated CD of the decade.
)TWIN CINEMA by The New Pornographers...a tour de' force of what this conglomerate of talented Canadians (and American treasure Neko Case) can do. Every song is unique, beautiful and pop-heaven.
)FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD by Neko Case...this was a grower. It took me literally a few years to fully appreciate it as a whole. Neko's songs do not always have an immediate impact (unlike her 2009 effort MIDDLE CYCLONE, also wonderful). But when they finally reveal themselves they engrave themselves into you.
)ALL THAT YOU CAN'T BEHIND by U2...a comeback of sorts. A return to their roots while not abandoning the evolved sound. And KITE is one of the most moving vocals Bono has ever recorded.
)ACCELERATE by R.E.M....another comeback. Peter Buck unleashed. And finally a drummer you can propel almost as well as Bill Berry did: former Ministry (!!) drummer Bill Rieflin. See below for more Rieflin influence.
)OLE, TARANTULA by Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3...Robyn hooks up with frequent collaborator Peter Buck, as well as current REM semi-members drummer Bill Rieflin and guitarist Scott MacCaughey to make some of his best music in years.
)GOLD by Ryan Adams
)CHALLENGERS by The New Pornographers...another grower. Slower, more complex than before but becomes beautiful and memorable.
)FUNERAL by The Arcade Fire
)SAM'S TOWN by The Killers....better than HOT FUSS. Criminally underrated.
)STEREO/MONO by Paul Westerberg
)TENACIOUS D by Tenacious D
)MIDDLE CYCLONE by Neko Case...THIS TORNADO LOVES YOU is my favorite song of 2009.
)THE SLOW WONDER by A.C. Newman
)IS THIS IT? by The Strokes
)KID A by Radiohead...hated at first. Took almost 5 years before I "got it."
)NO LINE ON THE HORIZON by U2...yet another grower, and marks another transition in their sound. The next CD should be something really special.
)TROUBLE IN DREAMS by Destroyer
)ELECTRIC VERSION by The New Pornographers.....yup.
)ONE WAY TICKET TO HELL...AND BACK by The Darkness
)DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME by Joey Ramone....just because.
)OTHER PEOPLE'S LIVES by Ray Davies
)REVEAL by R.E.M....another criminally underrated cd. R.E.M. channeling The Beach Boys with beautiful results. IMITATION OF LIFE is one of their best singles.
)GET GUILTY by A.C. Newman
25) SPOOKED by Robyn Hitchcock
I think you get the idea: I discovered a few new bands, but mostly stuck with the tried and true. Plus, in addition to 3 Pornographers CDs there are 5 by New Pornographers members: 2 from leader AC Newman, 2 Neko Case, and 1 by Dan Bejar, who is the sole member of Destroyer.
