I like lists. It's the OCD, no doubt. I love the tidy way you can organize what you like and you don't like even though it doesn't mean anything at the end of the day. Today you might think Kit Kat is your all-time favorite candy bar. 2 months later you are snarfing Snicker's until peanuts have your poop in it.
But I like them. And as a cheap, easy way to record a second blog entry I'm going for it.
NOTE: I have yet to watch INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. My bad. It's on the shelf. I expect it to make this list somewhere. Also want to but haven't seen: UP IN THE AIR, HARRY POTTER AND THE SOMETHING SOMETHING OF SOMETHING, ANTICHRIST, SHERLOCK HOLMES, THE LOVELY BONES, MOON (out on dvd Tuesday)....probably some that will end up on the garbage list, too.
Favorite films of 2009.Sort of in order:
WATCHMEN (fuck you, haters. It made me want to re-read the book, which I had previously considered a slog. Jackie Earl Haley deserves an acting nod, too)
FANTASTIC MR. FOX...shockingly fun, charming and surprising. The visual style is heaven. The voice work is beyond reproach. I laughed more than any other movie this year. Best Wes Anderson since RUSHMORE, and I hope he dabbles in animation some more.
DISTRICT 9....as entertaining as any action-sci fi movie I've seen in years. The political subtext isn't as deep as many make it out to be, but it doesn't matter because it is brilliantly paced. The aliens are disgusting yet become truly sympathetic. The action scenes are breakneck. I will watch this over and over.
THE HURT LOCKER....it's as good as they say it is. Best horro film of the year. yea. Horror.
OBSERVE & REPORT....the best thing Seth Rogen has done so far, and nobody went to see it. Shame on you.
DRAG ME TO HELL...Sam Raimi puts aside SPIDERMAN for a while, returns to his horror roots with a flat-out fucking home run, and nobody went to see it. Shame on you.
STAR TREK.....perfect reboot
ADVENTURLAND....again, where were you people?? Might be the best "coming of age" sort of movie I've ever seen. And a kick ass soundtrack.
PONYO.....beautiful, and a great time with my daughters
BRUNO....funnier than BORAT, and the most pro-gay film in years. Yes. That's right. Watch it, or watch it again. Think about the character, and the fact that real people in the movie TRULY BELIEVE THIS WALKING TALKING GAY STEREOTYPE IS A REAL PERSON!!! This is what morons believe homosexuals are. And the last line in the movie, sung by --I swear-- Snoop Dogg puts the capper on it. If you think this movie is offensive gay-bashing you're a moron.
ZOMBIELAND....look. It's called fucking ZOMBIELAND! And Woody Harrelson had his best role in years. Pure zombie joy.
AVATAR...yea. It's awesome. I liked a lot of movies a lot more but it still lived up what I hoped Cameron was birthing.
CORALINE....2nd best 3D movie this year. Henry Selick goes Burton-less, and makes another classic.
UP....the first 15 minutes are amazing. The rest is a fun adventure. Nowhere near as good as WALL-E but not many movies are.
(500) DAYS OF SUMMER.....yes, Zooey is in it. And it underwhelmed me at first. However, it kind of stuck with me in terms of how it takes the cliched quirky, indie film tone and characters and makes it clear that this isn't really how life is. It reminds me of GHOST WORLD in that sense, though I hold that movie in much higher regard.
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS......just fun. And funny. Great 3D. It just wanted to make you laugh and see some wonderful visuals. Anna Faris did some of the years best voice work here, too.
MEH MOVIES
PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.....i really have to see how it plays at home. I enjoyed it, but it left my brain a few hours after seeing it.
9......not the musical. The CGI apocalyptic visual beauty. Too bad the story was, well, meh.
THE BOX.....too batshit to dismiss, but too batshit to be the great film it could have been.
WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE....another one I have cooled on. It could change down the line but after thinking about it I find it brave and ambitious, but it really wasn't fun.
THE ROAD.....same here, sort of. Maybe the most depressing movie I've ever seen. Granted, I knew what I was getting myself into. And it may be that the movie works TOO well. It may not be completely faithful to the book (so I've been told) but it's an astonishingly literal adaptation. It may be another one that gets reconsidered down the line but for now it's admirable, but gave me no in-road (no pun intended) to it's aims.
UNDERRATED:
JENNIFER'S BODY....I don't much care for JUNO, and some of the dialogue did fall flat here. But it's eons better than it's rep. Cult movie in the making. Doesn't really spell-out everything that happens. Some sweet girl-on-girl demon fighting. Megan Fox isn't too bad, either.
CRANK 2: HIGH VOLTAGE....batshit. Idiotic. "Asinine," as my son called it. Filthy. Lewd. Violent. Fucking hilarious!! Fuck you, Chelios. CRANK 3 please!
Worst movies coming tomorrow. Or whatever. I already wrote more than I intended.
